This thesis was submitted in 1990 and has since become one of the classification handbooks most frequently referenced by colleagues interested in Byzantine amphoras. It is an honor for me that the classification of Byzantine amphoras that I suggested has become universally adopted and that my surname “Günsenin” is now used in referring to the various classes and types of amphoras involved. I have tried to make my thesis known to most colleagues and libraries around the world, but I think it is time to put it on my web-site.Byzantine amphora studies and underwater surveys that include them are increasing day by day. Young colleagues are still asking where to find my thesis, andI as yet do not know whether or not I will one day be able to revise it and prepare it for publication…!
Although the basic material of my thesis may contain errors, future generations might even so benefit from its easy availability.
Please do contact me if you ever become aware of new findings on land or underwater of amphoras included in my classification, and especially of work-shops that produced them…
